Irfan Ahmed has today welcomed a Liberal Democrat Conference motion by Tom Brake MP to tackle violence against women and has backed an amendment to the motion which calls for newspapers to be stopped from portraying women as sex objects.
Mr Ahmed who is a Liberal Democrat campaigner and activist believes this motion should be supported by all Liberal Democrats who are going to conference and openly backed the plans.
Irfan said:
"It is time we ensured women were treated as equals to men and they weren't treated as sex objects, punch bags or anything other than a male's equal. I am saddened by the culture certain newspapers have created in Britain which makes women look like sex objects when clearly women should be respected as mothers, sisters and wives.
"I am a follower of the religion of Islam which supports women's rights and also teaches Muslims that women and men are equal and that's another reason for why I back this amendment and motion.
"I hope all Lib Dems will realise that although restrictions on newspapers of sexualised images of women might seem illiberal to some they should
still support the amendment. In my personal view I have always said that liberalism should come with limits and on this debate we need to take a stance and put a limit on what is acceptable and what isn't."
